Getting started

Let's get started!

This is a quick start guide for those repairers unfamiliar with wiki editing/markup and wish to add their own repair case studies.

If this is your first experience of contributing to a wiki it might be a little confusing to start with, but within a few minutes you can be writing and publishing your first repair article. Just think of the benefit to the wider repair community! :)

Here are some suggested steps to help get you going[edit | edit source]

  • Create a user account if possible since it gives you a few more features and helps you track and update your contributions. You can however still edit and create pages without a user account.
  • Printing this page or opening a second browser tab for repaircafe.shoutwiki.com so that you can easily read this page whilst creating your first new Repair Case study will be helpful.

Simple edits to existing pages[edit | edit source]

1) To edit the text on any page simply go to the page you wish to edit and click on the Edit tab on the top right hand side of the page. To make it easier there is an edit tag alongside each subheading on a page, clicking this edit will take you directly to the text for that section of the page. If you want to know how to add links and headings see Some basic wiki editing tips.

2) Once you have completed your edit, check it by clicking the Show preview button at the bottom of the page. The preview page will appear above the editing box. Scroll down to continue editing inside the edit text box or save your changes by clicking the Save page button at the bottom of the page.

Creating a new Repair 'case study' Page...[edit | edit source]

1) Click on the Search box in the top right hand corner of the page.

2) Type in the name of the new Repair Page you want to create - for example: 'Singer Sewing Machine ABC' and click on the magnifying glass to the right of the search box.

3) The search will not find the page (if it does check out the page!) but it will offer you the opportunity to create one; click on the RED link highlighting your new 'Repair Page'"" name offered below the search box to create your new page.

Note: In order to maintain a familiar repair page format, template text/code is available to help format your new Repair page. When you read the template text it prompts you to INSERT information that follows the site's suggested posting guidelines.

4) An edit box should have appeared for your new page. The template code/text below must be be copied and pasted into the edit box on your newly created Repair Page. Do this before typing any text into your newly created page.

Some basic wiki editing tips[edit | edit source]

Adding a web link[edit | edit source]

  • Enter the address of the website you want to link to, one character space (press space bar once), followed by its description in the following format.
[http://website name.com Description]

Uploading images[edit | edit source]

  • To upload pictures to your new Repair Page, click on the Upload file link on the sidebar menu under Tools (Note: make sure you have created a user account first otherwise this tool will be hidden). Then click Browse..., choose the file from your computer, enter a basic description of the file and choose the correct license. After you've done these steps, click on the Upload file button.

Please limit your picture sizes to no more than 500 x 500 pixels before uploading. Once successfully uploaded insert the uploaded picture's filename and title in the appropriate template location.

Inserting a You Tube video[edit | edit source]

  • To insert a You Tube video type in the following wiki markup into the Repair Page at the point at which you want the video to be displayed:
<youtube>ID of the video here</youtube>

You can find the ID of the video by going into the YouTube page of it. An example URL for a YouTube video might be

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YozC8yFrZKI

- the part after v= is the ID.

Creating a new section header and bullet points[edit | edit source]

  • To create a new section that will automatically be included in the Repair Page's contents list simply type 2 equals on either side.

==New Heading Title==

  • If you want to create a sub heading within a section then type 4 equals on either side.

====New sub heading====

  • If you want to bullet point something add an asterix before the text

*Followed by your text

Linking the new Repair Page into the Main page[edit | edit source]

  • Go to the Main page and click on the edit of the relevant headed section for your new Repair page.

The edit box will appear and you will see a list of the repair items in that section - see example below: Add your item in the form shown and if possible place it in the correct alphabetical order relative to the other items listed.
